The City of Kirkland cares for our residents and their four-legged family members. By law, all dogs, and cats twelve weeks and older owned by Kirkland residents must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. The city cares about the health and wellbeing of our pets, but the reunification process for our pets, is the key to caring.
Acquiring a license makes the process of reunification quicker than not having one. Your contact information as the owner, is listed on the pet license tag. The Animal Control Officer can call the number and get the owner’s address and contact information. It is up to the pet owner to do their part to keep their pet/s healthy and ensure vaccinations are up to date. A rabies vaccination is one of the most important vaccines you can give to your pet.
Rabies is a deadly virus mainly contracted by bats in the state of Washington. The last reported case of rabies was in 2015 in a bat. A cat developed rabies after catching this rabid bat. Our first defense to protect humans, is to protect our pets (WAC 246-100-197).
