The Kirkland Police Department (KPD) invites Kirkland community members to participate in its annual Community Police Academy. This is a great opportunity to receive a firsthand experience of the inner workings of the KPD.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the community to learn the functions of the police department,” said Councilmember Neal Black. “Whether you’re a resident of Kirkland, work or run a business here, or just like visiting, we hope you’ll sign up for the program and get to know the police officers and professional staff who serve our Kirkland community and help keep it safe.”
The Community Police Academy is taught by Kirkland police officers and department staff, each with a different area of expertise such as De-Escalation, Investigations, SWAT, Unmanned Aerial System, Traffic, the Community Resource Officer Program, and our K-9 unit. Instruction combines in-class lectures with hands-on activities, including live training simulations and mock scenarios.
Kirkland Community Police Academy is an 8-week program held every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning on September 18 and running through November 13.
Class will be limited to 20 participants. Due to limited space, participants must be able to commit to attending each class in the 8-week program.
Participants must be at least 21 years of age, must live or work in Kirkland and have no prior felony convictions. There is no cost for participants.
To apply for Kirkland Community Police Academy, submit an online application. Participants’ applications will then be reviewed in conjunction with a background check. Once complete, they will be notified of acceptance into the class by email or phone. The deadline to apply is 12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4.
