Kirkland, WA – Kirkland Police Department (KPD) is warning the community about a familiar scam that’s on the rise.  Recently, perpetrators have been calling community members and posing as a member of the KPD in an attempt to convince community members to pay a fraudulent outstanding fine.

In the scam, the perpetrator calls a community member and identifies themselves as an officer with Kirkland Police Department. The suspect tells the resident that they have citations for “Failure to Appear,” “Contempt of Court,” or other outstanding penalties. In some instances, the impersonator tells the community member that they need to come to the KPD in-person to pay the fine in cash, and that they should call a cell phone number when they arrive at the police department.

At least five people in the last two weeks have reported versions of this scam to Kirkland Police. No community members have reported falling victim to the scheme.

The KPD reminds the community that no Kirkland police officer or staff member would ever ask a community member for cash, credit card information, or gift cards in order to pay a fine, or for any other reason.

To report fraudulent behavior, community members can file an online police report, call KPD’s non-emergency line at (425) 577-5656 or visit the Kirkland Police Department in-person at 11750 NE 118th St. in Kirkland.
