The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) recently announced that the City of Kirkland received GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year that ended December 31, 2020. This is the seventeenth consecutive year the City has been awarded this recognition.
“Accountability and transparency are key values of the City of Kirkland,” said Kirkland Mayor Penny Sweet. “This Council, like the Councils before it, takes its responsibility as stewards of taxpayer dollars very seriously. We are grateful to our dedicated staff for embodying these values and are honored the City was once again recognized for this achievement.”
In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, the City had to publish an easily readable and efficiently organized Annual Comprehensive Financial Report that satisfied both generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements. The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate the City’s financial story and motivate members of the community to read the report.
According to the GFOA, the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
