City and Waste Management have a Plan for Easing Storm Delays

Weather and safety issues have recently interrupted garbage, recycling and yard waste services for some Kirkland residents. The City of Kirkland and Waste Management are closely monitoring conditions and have contingency plans in place.  

“We’re working with Waste Management with three objectives in the forefront,” said John MacGillivray, solid waste programs supervisor for the City of Kirkland. “Our focus is on ensuring community safety, minimizing service disruptions and making sure residents have the best information available as conditions change.”  

 When weather-related disruptions extend for more than a week, impacted residents have options: Place carts at the curb on your next regular service day. Waste Management will collect extras at no additional cost.Bring your garbage and recycling to special drop-off locations.  

Drop-off locations are dependent on conditions and will be announced as soon as conditions allow. The best resource for updates as conditions change is the Waste Management website:  www.wmnorthwest.com/weatherboard for the latest updates on your service.  

Tips for using drop-off locations.
-Only household garbage and recycling will be accepted.
-No more than twice your normal load.
-Garbage in plastic bags will be accepted.
-Recycling in cardboard boxes or customer-owned cans will be accepted.  

Tips for putting extra loads at the curb:
-Extra garbage loads can be placed at the curb in plastic bags or customer-owned cans marked “garbage.”
-Extra recycling items must be kept dry and can be placed at curb in customer-owned cans marked “recycle.” -No recycling should be placed in plastic bags.
