February 2 - 8, 2025 is National Burn Awareness Week. Burn injuries are a leading cause of accidental death and injury in the United States, with over 398,000 individuals seeking medical care for burns each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children under five are twice as likely to visit an emergency department for burn injuries, and many of these incidents occur at home.
Whether you're cooking in the kitchen or relaxing at home, simple precautions can reduce burn risks and keep you and your loved ones safe:
- Kitchen Safety: Store flammable items away from heat, turn pot handles inward, and never leave cooking unattended.
- Bathroom Safety: Set water heaters below 120°F and supervise children during baths.
- Sleeping Areas: Extinguish candles before sleeping and keep heating devices away from fabrics.
For more information on National Burn Awareness Week, visit www.ameriburn.org.
How Does Kirkland’s Public Works Crew Prep and Respond for Winter Roads?
- Pretreat – Crews apply deicer using a priority plow map before snow hits.
- Monitor – They track conditions in real time and adjust as needed.
- Plow & Treat – Trucks are ready to switch from spraying deicer to plowing instantly.
- Repeat – Crews return as needed to treat hot spots and keep roads safe.
How Can You Prep for Winter Roads?
- Stay Informed: Track the forecast with National Weather Service - Seattle, Check WSDOT's real-time updates on road conditions, and follow the City of Kirkland’s website and social media for important notices.
- Know Your Route: Check the priority snow and ice route map to see which roads are plowed first.
- Drive Safely: If you must drive, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and use caution on hills and bridges, which freeze first.
- Be a Good Neighbor: Keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice in front of your home or business to help pedestrians stay safe.
- Stay Home if Possible: The best way to stay safe during a snowstorm is to avoid unnecessary travel and let crews do their work.

If weather conditions delay collection, WM will collect up to twice as much garbage, recycling, and yard waste on your next regularly scheduled collection day at no extra charge. No credits will be issued for collection delays due to weather.

King County officials recently visited 132nd Square Park to see firsthand how Kirkland is combining parks and environmental stewardship. Beneath this community park lies a uniquely designed stormwater treatment system, quietly working to capture and clean runoff from surrounding neighborhoods before it reaches our streams and lakes.
King County Executive Dow Constantine met with staff from Department of Natural Resources and Parks, and City leaders and staff from Parks & Recreation to explore how this approach can be expanded across the region—bringing cleaner water and smarter infrastructure to more communities.
We’re proud of this park and all it does for our environment and residents. Check out this video from the visit!
