Who is Your Water Servicer?

During cold snaps, our Public Works Department responds to an increased number of calls from residents experiencing water pipe issues. As cold temperatures descend upon us, it's important to know who to contact in case of an emergency.

Do you know your water service provider?

The City of Kirkland's Water Division manages the water infrastructure from parts of the South Juanita and Totem Lake neighborhoods southward. For the Finn Hill, Kingsgate, and North Juanita neighborhoods, water is provided by the Northshore Utility District and Woodinville Water District.

Please remember: the water line on your property up to the meter is the responsibility of the property owner.

A Tasty New Beginning for Food Rescue in 2025

As the New Year begins, some of us may find ourselves reflecting on the holiday season's food waste. If you noticed more leftovers than usual heading for the disposal, consider adopting these food-saving habits this year:

1. Fridge Nights - Set aside one night each week to evaluate the leftovers in your refrigerator and get creative with your meals. Use these ideas as a springboard for new dishes, and label and freeze any uneaten portions for future lunches.

2. Thoughtful Shopping - Develop a weekly meal plan by first surveying your fridge and pantry. This not only helps in minimizing waste but also saves money and time. By knowing what you already have, you can efficiently fill in the gaps with only necessary purchases.

3. Understand Food Labels - Learn the true meaning behind food labels:

  • "Sell by" dates are for store staff, not consumers. Food is often good past this date.
  • "Best before" or "use by" dates relate to quality, not safety. If these dates have just passed, and the food has been stored properly and passes your sensory tests, it is generally still safe to consume. These dates emphasize peak freshness rather than edibility.

Embracing these practices can help reduce food waste and make a positive impact on your budget and the environment. Let's make 2025 the year of mindful consumption and sustainable habits!

Sweep the Salt

You may notice some salt and de-icers being used around the city, or maybe you're preparing to use these products yourself.

Using salt and de-icers on sidewalks and driveways can improve safety during icy conditions, but runoff can harm local creeks, lakes, and wetlands. Here are tips to stay safe while protecting our waterways:

  • After snow and ice melt or temperatures rise, sweep up excess salt or sand and dispose of it in the trash.
  • Follow product instructions carefully. More is not better—excess use increases pollution and costs.
  • Use a hand-held spreader for consistent application.
  • Apply deicer before snow and ice accumulate to prevent bonding with pavement and speed up melting.
