KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Kirkland Fire Department deployed six firefighters and a fire engine on January 9, 2025 to the Los Angeles area to assist with wildland firefighting efforts. The crews will work alongside regional partners as King County Strike Team 1, which is made up of engine companies from Bothell Fire, Fall City Fire, Shoreline Fire, Eastside Fire, and Kirkland Fire.
“Kirkland’s commitment to serve others doesn’t stop at our city limits,” said Councilmember Amy Falcone. “We are immensely proud of our firefighters who are always ready to go the distance when they hear the call for help.”
This marks the fourth time Kirkland’s wildland fire team has been deployed to California since the team’s formation in 2018. In addition to California, the team has provided wildland firefighting support in Oregon, Arizona, and Hawaii, as well as hurricane recovery operations on the East Coast. Currently, Kirkland Fire’s wildland team consists of 42 members who maintain certifications that enable them to respond swiftly to wildfire emergencies.
“The strength of our team extends beyond those on the ground,” said Kirkland Fire Chief Joe Sanford. “Families and coworkers provide the foundation that enables our firefighters to serve in these challenging situations. We’re keeping all of them, as well as the crews battling the fires in California, in our thoughts.”
The journey to Southern California will take approximately two days, after which the crews will be assigned to specific wildfire operations. Once on site, the firefighters will work in rigorous 24-hour shifts, alternating with 24-hour rest periods for up to 14 days.
