KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Kirkland Fire Department has welcomed home its firefighters following a 14-day deployment to help battle wildfires in Los Angeles, California. The deployment was part of a large-scale mobilization in which Washington state sent 55 engines to aid emergency response operations.

To support the effort, Kirkland Fire deployed a reserve engine, ensuring there was not a reduction in service to the Kirkland community. Four Kirkland firefighters staffed the reserve engine, while two additional Kirkland firefighters joined Fall City Fire Department’s crew, allowing their engine to meet staffing requirements for deployment. Throughout the deployment, crews operated on a demanding schedule of 32.5 hours on duty, followed by 15.5 hours off. Due to unpredictable winds and rapidly changing conditions, there were times when crews had to stay overnight with their vehicles to stay ready for immediate response.

“Our firefighters rose to the occasion, demonstrating resilience, professionalism, and a dedication to providing emergency aid to those in need,” said Councilmember Neal Black. “Kirkland’s ability and willingness to assist at such a critical moment demonstrates the strength of our Fire Department and our commitment to mutual aid.”

Fire Chief Joe Sanford expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the deployment, including those who covered shifts, assisted with training, and secured wildland gear and equipment. Chief Sanford also thanked the families who managed responsibilities at home while their loved ones were away.
