KIRKLAND, Wash. – Kirkland Police Department (KPD) will host its fourth voluntary ‘Guns for Gift Cards’ exchange on Saturday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Kirkland Justice Center.
“The City’s ‘Guns for Gift Cards’ events have been very helpful in supporting our community voluntarily disposing of unwanted firearms,” said Councilmember Neal Black. “Our first three events in 2022 successfully removed 197 guns from community members who relinquished them in exchange for $23,500 in gift cards. If you’ve been considering getting rid of your old or otherwise unwanted guns, we hope to see you at the event.”
Although no registration is required for the Guns for Gift Cards exchange, proof of Kirkland residency, such as a utility bill, is required to participate. Police staff will only review an address to confirm Kirkland residency. Participant identity is otherwise anonymous, and personnel will not log any identifying information.
KPD’s Guns for Gift Cards exchange will occur at the Kirkland Justice Center (KJC), located at 11750 NE 118th Street in Kirkland. Please note there are security cameras at the KJC for public safety.
Participants are asked to bring unloaded guns they wish to trade in for gift cards and to follow these rules:
- Stay in your vehicle when you arrive at the KJC
- Gun(s) must be unloaded
- Gun(s) must be in the trunk or backseat of your vehicle, or otherwise out of reach
Depending on the type of gun(s) relinquished, participants may receive gift cards worth $25 to $250. Community members will generally be limited to submitting 10 eligible firearms in exchange for gift cards, and onsite staff have the discretion to increase or decrease that limit based on the firearms being turned in, the amount of participation from the public, and the overall desire to safely dispose of unwanted firearms. Event staff have sole discretion about any and all firearms submitted, including determinations as to what constitutes a firearm, the amount of gift cards given in exchange for firearms, and who may participate.
