Kirkland, Washington – Mayor Penny Sweet set an optimistic vision of the future during her State-of-the-City address, giving an inspirational overview of the City’s recent accomplishments, ongoing projects and future goals, while proclaiming the state of the City as “booming!”
The address was given at the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce business luncheon on Thursday, February 14, in downtown Kirkland. Mayor Sweet was selected to serve as mayor by the Kirkland City Council in January, after Washington State Representative and former Mayor Amy Walen announced that she would resign her position to focus on her legislative responsibilities. Sweet will serve as mayor for the remainder of 2019. “I am honored to have been selected by the City Council to serve as your new Mayor,” Sweet said. “I want to thank my colleagues for their faith in me and promise that I will do everything in my power to be worthy of their trust.” Sweet’s message carefully blended humor and hope as she zeroed in on City challenges, including future growth, affordable housing and increasing traffic congestion. She championed the City’s vibrant business community, while showcasing the City’s commitment to betterment through key infrastructure investments, enhanced public safety and efforts to further broaden its sense of inclusivity. She thanked City staff as a whole for its hard-work-pays-off mentality, and expressed gratitude to her colleagues on the Kirkland City Council for their meaningful contributions to City leadership. “We are fortunate as a City to have such a talented team of elected officials who all have the hearts, brains and the courage to act on our behalf,” Sweet said.
