KIRKLAND, Wash. – The City of Kirkland is transforming the former Houghton Park and Ride into the temporary Houghton Park and Play Park. Join the Kirkland City Council on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 1 p.m. for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Community members can enjoy popsicles and a brand-new skate park, just one of the new features at the temporary play park.
"We are very excited to celebrate this new temporary play space for pickleball players, gardeners, skaters and others at the former Houghton Park and Ride,” said Councilmember John Tymczyszyn. "This fun transformation shows how dedicated we are to making sure recreational choices in Kirkland are diverse and accessible for everyone as long-term plans are considered for the site.”
The temporary recreation features at the site include:
- Community Gardens
- Pickleball Courts
- Modular Skate Park
- Modular Pump Track
- Bicycle Play Garden
These improvements will remain in place as the City evaluates the long-term uses of the site. These additions reflect the City's commitment to improving recreational services for the community.
The City of Kirkland acquired the 5-acre site from the Washington State Department of Transportation in early 2024 with the intention of exploring recreational uses. While the City continues to deliberate on the long-term vision for the site, the City Council directed staff to implement the temporary improvements.
The Houghton Park and Play is located at 6920 NE 70th Place in Kirkland. For more information and updates on the temporary expansion of park and recreation services at the Houghton Park and Play, please visit www.kirklandwa.gov/houghton-park-and-play.
