KIRKLAND, Wash. – No one wants a family member to experience a heart attack while enjoying an outing at the park. To help ensure a safe experience for all, the City has installed its first AED (automated external defibrillator) at Kirkland’s 132nd Square Park in the Kingsgate neighborhood. If someone experiences a sudden cardiac arrest, an AED can be used to restart their heart. The sooner an AED is successfully utilized, the greater the chance that person will survive.
“Seconds matter in a cardiac emergency,” said Councilmember Penny Sweet. “This new AED is right next to the park’s large multi-purpose field, where it can help save the lives of both adults and kids if needed.”
The AED at 132nd Square Park is mounted in a heated, weatherproof cabinet on the storage building next to the turf field. The AED is simple to use, with step-by-step verbal instructions. AEDs are safe and will not deliver a shock unless the unit determines one is needed.
In the event of a cardiac emergency, always call 911 before attempting to find an AED.
The Council is currently evaluating options for expanding AEDs throughout the Kirkland Parks system. 132nd Square Park is located at 13159 132nd Avenue Northeast.
